FAQ

Why the decision to use cloth diapers?
There are many factors that influence a decision to use cloth. The three most common are environmental, health and financial.
Why don’t more people use cloth diapers?
Most people don’t realize that cloth diapering is an option any longer. They believe that once disposables were introduced that cloth got phased out. If you do find someone familiar with cloth, often they only know about the older style of diapering. They don’t realize that today’s diapers come in many fabrics, colours and styles to suit every family’s needs.
Is it really...umm…gross?
It’s not a whole lot different than using disposable diapers. A diaper change is a diaper change and messy is messy, with cloth or disposable! Once the change has been made, the diaper goes into the diaper pail, which has a cloth pail liner. Solids can be “shaken” into the toilet (no need to scrub them). Then you take the pail liner to the washing machine. The diapers and the cloth pail liner go in. You can sanitize your washing machine every couple months by running an empty wash with detergent.
How much extra work is it?
It really depends on the amount of diapers you buy, but it generally means 1-2 extra loads of laundry a week. Not a lot of work at all!!
How do you clean them?
When you change a poopy diaper the solids get shaken off into the toilet (no need to dunk, swirl or scrub). The diaper then goes into a dry pail with a diaper pail liner (if you are using pocket diapers, separate the insert from the diaper). On wash day simply take the pail liner filled with diapers to the washing machine. Dump them all in, turn the bag inside out and dump it in too. Run a cold cycle with no soap. Next run a hot wash cycle with an extra rinse using about 1/8 cup of liquid detergent. You may need to run an extra rinse if you still see suds in your laundry tub. Diapers can then go into the dryer for one cycle on low-medium heat. The diapers and bag can also be line dried if you prefer.
How much is it going to cost?
Cost will depend on the system you decide to purchase. The most economical route is “prefold” diapers (large rectangles of cotton) that are folded and held in place with a cover. With this system you would need to buy prefolds and about 6 covers.
“Fitted” (material is contoured and may have snaps or Velcro) diapers with covers are also a reasonably priced option.
More expensive are the “pocket” diapers or “all-in-ones”. These don’t require additional covers as the waterproof liner is built in, but the diapers start off at a higher price. The cost of the systems ranges from about $400 to $900+. Keep in mind this is the cost for cloth diapering your child from birth to potty training (assuming 3 different sized diapers are used, small-medium-large). While the cost for cloth may be more expensive up front than disposable, you certainly don’t need to buy everything (ie. Each different size) right away. If you were paying $20 a week for disposable diapers, the cost to diaper a two and a half year old child (52 weeks x 2.5 x $20) would be about $2600.
I’m afraid of using pins on my baby, what do I do?
No need for pins! You can select a diapering system that uses snaps or Velcro-type fasteners (in fact, most of them do!). We even sell neat Snappi-fasteners so you don’t have to use pins even when using prefolds.
How do I get started?
First you need to decide how much money you are prepared to spend and what type of diapering system you want. We sell a variety of sampler packages that contain a number of different types of diapers, so you can try one of each and decide from that which ones are you favourite. The number of diapers that you purchase depends on the number of washings you want to do. More diapers equals less washing. We generally recommend about 16 diapers (for washing every other day).
Can you use cloth diapers overnight?
Of course! Our children sleep through the night (12 hours +) and wake up dry! With cloth diapers you can control the amount your diapers absorb.
Are cloth diapers bulky?
Some types of diapers are bulky, while others are trim. If bulkiness concerns you, let us know and we can pick the perfect trim diaper for you. There is no need for cloth diaper “bubble butt”!
What’s your favourite type of diaper?
Oh how to choose…honestly, we sell a number of different types of diaper and we are sure to try each one on our little ones. If we don’t like it, we won’t sell it.
Give me one more reason to buy cloth diapers!
A great reason to buy cloth diapers is that you will often be supporting a work-at-home-mother (WAHM) or small business. Great moms in both Canada and the United States sew many of the diapers. And many of the people that you buy from (like us!) are also work-at-home-mothers. You’ll be supporting families at the grassroots level. We will strive to make your cloth diapering experience a good one, and will go out of their way to make sure that cloth diapering works for you!
